Amarillo, Texas is located in the middle of the Texas Panhandle on relatively flat land. The name, which means yellow in Spanish, most likely comes from either the yellow wildflowers that are abundant in the spring and summer or the nearby Amarillo Lake and Creek, which have yellow soil along their banks and shores.

Amarillo is the regional economic center for the Texas Panhandle, with an extremely large meat packing industry that produces about ¼ of the United States's beef supply. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association is also headquartered in the area. Just south of Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest canyon system after the Grand Canyon.

The city stays true to its Texan culture by hosting numerous cowboy events. The Amarillo National Center hosts a large range of events, from equestrian competitions, to rodeos, to motor sports. Every year, the World Championship Ranch Rodeo is hosted at the Amarillo Civic Center. The Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2006 and hosts concerts by the Amarillo Opera, the Amarillo Symphony, and Lone Star Ballet. The city also has several museums to celebrate the history of the area, including the Amarillo Museum of Art, the Texas Pharmacy Museum, the English Field Air & Space Museum, and more. The Wonderland Amusement Park is located within Amarillo.

Amarillo has a two year community college, Amarillo College, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at Amarillo. The city also is home to a few branch campuses for various universities. The city is served by Amarillo City Transit.
