Modern techno versatility - 2003 Suzuki Aerio SX AWD wagon
Earlier this year, Suzuki launched the 2002 Aerio sedan and wagon into the American automotive marketplace. The economical subcompact features techno-industrial exterior good looks and a tasteful, modern minimalist interior with a distinct character. For 2003, Suzuki turned up the heat by offering a low price all-wheel drive variant for the SX wagon.
Consumers looking for a low cost all-wheel drive solution who have ruled out SUV's and the traditional all-wheel drive market offerings as too expensive should consider the Aerio SX AWD wagon. For just $1,000 more, all-wheel drive is available in the budget-minded Aerio wagon.
The Aerio SX is a study in packaging with numerous nooks, crannies and storage compartments throughout the passenger cabin and cargo area.
Pleasantly impressive, the Aerio SX wagon is built in Kosai, Japan, and is offered in just one trim level. Power is generated by a 2.0L 16-valve DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual gearbox transmits torque to the pavement. A four-speed automatic transmission is $1,000 additional.
For the Suzuki Aerio SX, economical does not mean stripped! The wagon comes equipped with the following features: air conditioning, power windows, power side-view mirrors, power door locks, three-spoke tilt steering wheel, digital instrument display, outside temperature display, rear-window defroster, multiple cupholders, a split-folding rear seat for added cargo carrying ability, six-disc in-dash CD player, cruise control, front map pockets, rear spoiler with brake light, fog lamps, intermittent wipers, rear wiper/washer and chrome exhaust tip.
On the road, the four-cylinder engine delivers a very capable performance. Handling and control are solid and predictable. The automatic all-wheel drive system does not add drag or negatively affect the driveability of the wagon in any way. Yokohama Geolandar G046 P195/55R15 tires provide the necessary bite for traction and control.
Inside the cabin, a tall greenhouse results in an airy environment that offers more interior room than many of the Aerio's better known competitors. The driver enjoys a great outward view of the road. Displays and controls are easy to read and operate. The digital dashboard is clean and bold. It is direct and to the point without the glitz. Readouts allow the driver to monitor speed, mileage, tachometer, fuel and water temperature.
The center console holds two cupholders for driver and front passenger. There is one additional cup holder at the rear of the console for rear seat occupants. Entry and exit from all four doors is easy and convenient -- even for adults. The split folding rear seat adds to the flexibility of the available interior space to haul passengers and/or cargo.
