Hialeah, Florida is part of the greater Miami area and has the largest population of Cuban and Cuban Americans in the United States. It is the second largest Spanish speaking community in the country as well, with over 90% Spanish-speaking households. Due to this, Telemundo, the second largest spanish television network in the United States, is headquartered in Hialeah.
The luxurious Hialeah Park Race Track opened in 1925. The grand park brought several well-known figures to Hialeah, including the Kennedy family, Harry Truman, and Winston Churchill. Amelia Earhart left the continental United States from Hialeah in 1937 for her attempted around the world journey. The Amelia Earhart Park lies just outside of Hialeah to commemorate her.
Hialeah is known for its vibrant community of mom-and-pop stores. These smaller stores are able to compete against the national name brand retailers by catering more specifically to the community. The city has three tennis centers, five public swimming pools and aquatic centers, and fourteen public parks. Hialeah is also served by parts of the Miami Metrorail. Florida National University, the College of Business and Technology, and Miami-Dade College Hialeah Campus are all located within Hialeah.
The city name, Hialeah, is of Seminole origin and translates to "upland prairie." The city is, in fact, located on a prairie between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades. The city is nicknamed "The City of Progress" because it is one of the fastest growing cities in Florida.
