Sophisticated Utility: 2018 Ford Edge Crossover
The 2018 Ford Edge is a sophisticated crossover utility vehicle that is loaded with technology, a high level of craftsmanship and above average vehicle dynamics. With a car-based design, Edge delivers better on-road comfort, fuel efficiency and overall driving dynamics than any truck-based SUV. Last updated in 2015, the Edge is based on the same global platform as the Ford Fusion sedan.
What’s new for 2018 is the SEL Sport Appearance Package. The new package features a dark-accented exterior, unique 19-inch premium Magnetic-painted wheels, grille, mirror caps and rear spoiler. Interior enhancements include Mayan Gray fabric seats with Umber-colored Miko suede cloth perforated inserts, a Copper Dune textured applique that carries the color theme to the dashboard and custom embroidered Umber “Edge” floor mats.
Available in SE, SEL, Titanium and Sport trim levels, power for the Edge is generated from a brace of EcoBoost gasoline engines: 3.5L V6, 2.7L V6, and a 2.0L four-cylinder. Torque for all three engines is communicated to the asphalt via a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard for Sport.
The control hardware has been developed specifically to isolate road imperfections and absorb noise without compromising handling. The front-wheel-drive Edge features a MacPherson-type front suspension, with an integral-link independent rear with coil springs and a 23-millimeter antiroll bar. The advanced system has been tuned to deliver a more dynamic, engaging ride customers will feel immediately.
Thanks in part to the use of high-strength steel, the solid body structure of the Edge provides robust platform for the new suspension.
Inside the passenger cabin, the dashboard and center console have been carefully designed and shaped to look like one thin, streamlined piece. A central eight-inch LCD touch screen supporting SYNC with MyFord Touch is available on even more models. Storage areas have been improved throughout the cabin, with a covered media bin on top of the center stack; an open, pass-through-type storage area beneath the climate controls; an open storage area on the instrument panel, below and to the left of the steering wheel; and large pockets on each door.
Thanks in part to smart design work and next-generation seats that are thinner and more supportive, the interior of the Edge is spacious. Adding further to the feeling of openness, Edge offers one of the largest sunroofs in the business – Ford’s Panoramic Vista Roof, measuring 47.7 inches front to back.
