Street Legal – Barely! 2017 Dodge Viper Coupe
This is the final year for the Dodge performance icon and the 25th anniversary of the Viper. As a result, the automaker has developed six serialized special edition models to commemorate the end of production and the Viper’s 25th Anniversary. The special edition models are: Viper 1:28 Edition ACR; Viper GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR; Viper Snakeskin Edition GTC; Viper Snakeskin Edition ACR; Viper VoooDoo II Edition ACR; and Viper Dodge Dealer Edition ACR.
Available in SRT, GT, GTS and ACR models, the Viper ACR (American Club Racer) model returns as fastest street legal Viper track car ever and undisputed track record king with 13 road course lap records as certified by Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). All 2017 Viper GTC and ACR models are available in more than 50 million unique build configurations through ”1 of 1” customization program that enables buyers to create their one-of-a-kind “Snake” from the ground up.
Since 1992, Dodge and SRT have built approximately 30,000 Vipers at the Mack Avenue Assembly (1992–1994) and Conner Avenue Assembly Plant (1995–current), both in Detroit, Michigan.
Continuing for the 2017 model year is the exclusive Viper “1 of 1” customization program. With 16,000 exterior color options, including matte exterior finishes, 24,000 custom stripe colors, 11 wheel options, 16 interior trims and seven aero packages, three brake packages and four suspension options, there are more than 50 million ways for buyers to customize their one-of-a-kind Dodge Viper.
The fifth generation of the flagship performance machine of the Dodge and SRT brands features more power and performance, superior craftsmanship, new technologies and creature comforts. Powering the 2017 Viper is an all-aluminum 8.4L V-10 prime mover bolted to a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual gearbox.
Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity than the previous generation model, the Dodge Viper chassis benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R, Competition Coupe and ACR-X models.
In addition to the aluminum X-brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting, an aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to 50/50 weight distribution, while providing excellent crashworthiness. This also benefits torsional rigidity and stiffness.
Structurally, many reworked chassis components take advantage of new materials able to accommodate reduced thickness and complex shapes without compromising structural rigidity. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds versus the previous generation model.
The driver-oriented interior cabin of the Viper SRT GT features superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies.
All major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped, with additional padding applied in comfort areas. Nappa leather seats with Alcantara inserts are included with the new Viper GT model along with accent stitching throughout the interior. Color combinations include a black interior with black seats, a black interior with Sepia seats, and a black interior with the Demonic Red seats.
Quality fit and finish is showcased across the lineup with details such as the triple paint-finished gun-metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window-switch bezels, shifter base, park-brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab-handle on the center console.
The customizable instrument cluster provides an unmatched presentation of the exclusive Dodge SRT Performance Pages’ statistics and feedback to the driver, including 0-to-60 mph; 0-to-100 mph; eighth- and quarter-mile elapsed times; braking distance; instant g-force measurement readouts and top-speed performance.
The 8.4-inch Uconnect radio doubles as a display for Dodge SRT Performance Pages content, such as quarter-mile elapsed time and speed. Data also can be stored for future reference.
Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer-molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy thigh support and deep side-bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the Dodge Viper.
