Founded in 1779, Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and perhaps best known as "Music City." Situated along the Cumberland River, Nashville has long been an important center for commerce and transportation. An economic resurgence starting in the 1990’s has lured important new businesses and transformed the downtown area with new landmarks, including two major sports facilities; LP Field and the Bridgestone Arena.
Nashville’s true identity is tied to the music and entertainment industry, a tradition that began with the increase in popularity of country music in the mid-20th century. Most of country music’s biggest stars of the past and present have ties to Nashville, whether performing in historic venues like Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry House or recording hit songs in the city’s music studios. Nashville’s music scene has expanded to multiple genres these days, with downtown clubs and bars providing an exciting mix of sounds each night. Not to be overlooked is Nashville’s reputation as a hub for learning and higher education. Vanderbilt University is one of 24 colleges and universities in the city, earning Nashville the moniker "Athens of the South." The city even boasts a full-scale replica of the Athenian Parthenon that was constructed in 1897.
Many drivers have likely passed through Nashville on one of the three major interstates that meet in the Music City; I-24, I-40 and I-65. A commuter rail network was recently constructed in Nashville, linking the downtown riverfront area with the nearby suburb of Lebanon.
