Sporty elegance - 2012 Smart fortwo passion cabriolet
Developed and owned by Daimler AG of Germany, the automaker believes that with volatile fuel prices, increased urban congestion and a mindset of environmental responsibility, now is the right time for the rear-wheel drive Smart fortwo in America.
Offered in just the passion model, the rear-wheel drive fortwo cabriolet is powered by a 1.0L 3-cylinder engine joined to an automated five-speed manual transmission with manual or automatic mode.
Despite its very compact dimensions by American standard, the safety features built into the diminutive two-door are both extensive and impressive. Each Smart fortwo starts with a protective "tridion safety cell" that has been developed especially for the Smart to help ensure crash compatibility with larger passenger cars.
Inside the cabin is a study in paradox. Although it has a compact set of overall dimensions, the fortwo exhibits an amazing feeling of spaciousness that is comparable with a standard size sedan. Entry and exit from the vehicle is impressively easy. Even people over six-feet tall do not feel cramped because of the added headroom. The passenger seat is positioned six inches further back than the driver's seat to give the passengers optimum shoulder room.
The fortwo cabriolet features a soft top which is fully automatic and can be infinitely adjusted to any position. The cabriolet does not have to be stationary for the soft top to be opened or closed – this can be done at any speed. The rear part of the soft top also can be opened to the final position and closed again at the touch of a button.
All that remains for the full cabriolet experience is to remove the side roof bars. These can be taken out in no time and stowed in a special compartment in the tailgate. The soft top offers further added comfort and safety with the heated rear glass window.
