Garland is a large city just northeast of Dallas and is part of the Dallas-Forth Worth metropolitan area. In the late 1800s, two small towns were arguing about where to place the post office that would serve both. Garland, named after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland, was created between the two in 1887 to house the post office and end the dispute. Shortly after, Garland absorbed the two smaller towns and was incorporated in 1891.
The Garland Landmark Museum lies in the former Santa Fe depot. It opened in 1974 when the building was officially declared a historical landmark. The museum holds artifacts from early settlers, old newspapers, farm tools, and quilts. The Granville Arts Center is operated by the city of Garland. Inside this complex is the Plaza Theater and an atrium that hosts banquets, conventions, and trade shows. The city also operates 60 parks and six recreation centers, including Hawaiian Falls water park.
There are two institutions of higher learning in Garland, Richland College and Amberton University. Singer LeAnn Rimes is from Garland, Texas and the popular show King of the Hill was created by a former resident, Mike Judge. The city the show is set in is loosely based on Garland.
Garland is served by two stops on the blue line of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). The city also owns the Garland/DFW Heliplex that opened in 1989. Several major highways run through Garland as well, including Interstates 30 and 635 and the President George Bush Turnpike.
